Oriental

Antique Chinese furniture was all made by hand by highly skilled craftsmen who were individually commissioned by each customer. Traditionally the customer would purchase the wood, usually a type of hardwood known as rosewood. In efforts to reduce waste, the irregular pieces were used in the internal portion of the furniture which is not readily visible. On the outside, only the finest pieces of wood were used. The joinery is exceptional, using different variations of mortise and tenon joints and dove tail for the drawers, rarely resorting to glue or nails but remaining very sturdy. The ingenious Chinese designs are usually very simple, but wonderfully ornate [O23].
